I have long been looking for a good command line ftp client for linux. The ftp application is so low level, that it is simply unusable for me. 
Fortunately I found 2 better choices:
1. ncftp
2. yafc
On an ubuntu-machine, just apt-get install … and run it.
If you were ever forced to work with the ftp client shipped with Ubuntu you’ll simply love it!
